On Thursday, Netflix India unveiled its forthcoming lineup of Indian content, marking the commencement of a fresh era for web series and films. Leading the charge is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s lavish period drama “Heeramandi,” signaling the streaming platform’s ambitious venture into a new realm of storytelling. Audiences will also get to watch a Drama-Thriller starring Kriti Sanon and Kajol.
Here’s a list of Netflix India’s eclectic, star-studded India slate for 2024:
Among the fresh additions to the lineup are the comedic flick ‘Wild Wild Punjab,’ produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, and directed by Simarpreet Singh. The plot follows a cohort of inebriated youths who embark on a mission to seek retribution for a friend’s heartbreak by gate-crashing his former partner’s wedding in pursuit of closure. The ensemble cast features Varun Sharma, Sunny Singh, Manjot Singh, Jassie Gill, Patralekhaa, and Ishita Raj.
Another release is Akshay Roy’s ‘Vijay 69,’ a charming slice-of-life tale following a man’s decision to partake in a triathlon nearing his seventies, presented by TRY Entertainment.
Starring Kriti Sanon and Kajol, “Do Patti,” written by Kanika Dhillon and directed by Shashanka Chaturvedi, is described as “an exhilarating and unpredictable rollercoaster, blending suspense, emotion, and drama in an unprecedented manner.
Following the triumph of the 2021 thriller “Hasseen Dillruba,” its sequel, “Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba,” shifts the setting to Agra. Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey return to their respective roles, joined by newcomers Sunny Kaushal and Jimmy Shergill in the cast.
The streaming platform also revealed the ensemble for Anubhav Sinha’s “IC814: The Kandahar Attack” and introduced a synopsis for director Homi Adajania’s suspenseful thriller “Murder Mubarak.” Set in New Delhi, the film follows an investigation triggered by a death at an upscale leisure club, unraveling into a labyrinth of complexity as hidden truths and deception emerge, casting suspicion on everyone involved.
Helmed by Imtiaz Ali, the movie ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ features Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles, with music composed by Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman. The film narrates the real-life tale of the renowned Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila, whose meteoric rise to fame in the 1980s stirred controversy, culminating in his tragic assassination at the tender age of 27.
On the TV front is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, described as an “epic tale of love, authority, treachery, hardship, and eventual liberation,” the series revolves around the fierce competition between rival courtesans Mallikajaan and Fareedan for dominance. Set against the backdrop of the freedom movement, the show promises to immerse viewers in a captivating narrative.
In the upcoming Season 3 of Kota Factory, viewers can expect an emotionally intense and high-stakes narrative. After enduring the rigorous initial preparation and enduring the constant academic pressure, students prepare themselves for the pivotal IIT JEE exam in the new season.
The streaming platform also revealed plans for the upcoming season of “Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein,” wherein the three central characters will unveil their true natures. Additionally, the announcement included details about Season 3 of the highly anticipated series “Mismatched,” starring Rohit Saraf and Prajakta Koli. This new season will follow Dimple and Rishi as they embark on a fresh journey in a different location.
In the realm of unscripted content, Netflix introduces several exciting offerings. These include ‘Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Lives,’ ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show,’ set to premiere on March 30th, a cricket documentary titled ‘The Greatest Rivalry – India vs Pakistan,’ the Canadian co-production ‘To Kill a Tiger,’ and the hip-hop documentary ‘Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous.’
