The 96th Academy Awards, held at the illustrious Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, showcased the pinnacle of cinematic excellence as the film industry came together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the past year.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, clinched victory in seven out of the thirteen categories for which it was nominated. Among its wins were the prestigious awards for Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan himself. Additionally, Cillian Murphy was honoured with the Best Actor award, while Robert Downey Jr. secured the Best Supporting Actor accolade for their remarkable performances in the film. The film also emerged victorious in the categories of best cinematography, best original score, and best film editing.
Nolan has had a complicated history with the Oscars, having been nominated multiple times before. His previous nominations include directing “Dunkirk” in 2017, as well as his work on films like “Memento” in 2001 and “Inception” in 2010.
However, his blockbuster hit “The Dark Knight” in 2008 was notably overlooked by the Academy for best picture and director, sparking criticism and prompting the organization to expand the number of nominated films from five to ten.
In an unexpected turn of events, Emma Stone took home the award for best actress for her role in “Poor Things,” a film that also secured victories in three technical categories: best costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling. Her win came as a surprise, as many had considered Lily Gladstone, who garnered acclaim for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” to be the frontrunner in the category.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph clinched the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “The Holdovers.”
The Oscar for Best Animated Feature was awarded to “The Boy and the Heron,” directed by Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki. In the category of best international feature, Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” emerged victorious. Additionally, “20 Days in Mariupol” secured the award for best documentary.
The award for the best original screenplay was claimed by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for “Anatomy of a Fall,” while Cord Jefferson took home the prize for best-adapted screenplay for “American Fiction”.
Billie Eilish made history by becoming the youngest two-time Oscar recipient at the age of 22, winning the award for best song with her ballad “What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie.” She co-wrote the song with her brother, Finneas O’Connell. This achievement follows their previous Oscar win for composing the theme song for the 2021 film “No Time to Die.”
